10 Signs You Need to Call a Handyman vs. Doing It Yourself
Some home repairs are a Saturday project. Others can start a fire, flood a room or injure you. Knowing which is which is the difference between a small bill and a disaster.
This guide lists 10 warning signs that mean you should stop and call a qualified handyman or licensed professional. It does not teach you how to fix the dangerous ones, because you should not attempt them. If anything below sounds like your situation, put the tools down and make the call.
Stop now: call emergency services first
If you smell gas, see smoke or fire, or someone has had an electric shock, do not wait for a handyman. Get everyone out, then call your local emergency number and your utility company's emergency line from a safe distance. Call us after the danger is under control.
Do not switch lights or appliances on or off if you smell gas.
Do not touch anyone who is still in contact with a live electrical source.
Do not go back inside to collect belongings.
Signs 1–5: call a professional, do not DIY
1. Sparks, burning smells or hot outlets
Warm switches, scorch marks, buzzing sockets or a burning smell point to a wiring fault. Electrical work is not a DIY job. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of house fires. Switch off the affected circuit at the breaker only if it is safe to reach, leave it off, and book a licensed electrician or a handyman who works with one.
2. Breakers that keep tripping
A breaker that trips again and again is a warning that something is wrong in the circuit. Do not keep resetting it and do not open the panel. Call a professional to find the cause.
3. Flickering or dimming lights
Occasional flicker can be a bulb. Flickering across several rooms, or when appliances start, can mean a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. Have it inspected before it becomes a hazard.
4. Leaking pipes, ceilings or walls
Water damage spreads quickly and can reach wiring. If water is dripping near lights, outlets or the ceiling is bulging, stay clear of that area and shut off the electricity to it if you can do so safely. Close the main water valve, then call us right away. A temporary wipe-up is fine; the repair is for a professional.
5. Cracks, sagging or sticking structures
New wall cracks wider than a hairline, a sagging ceiling or floor, or doors and windows that suddenly jam can signal structural movement. Do not cut, drill or remove anything to fix it. Get it assessed by a professional before anyone relies on that structure.
Signs 6–10: do not wait on these
6. Any gas smell or suspected gas leak
Leave the building and call your gas supplier's emergency line and emergency services. Never attempt gas repairs yourself. Gas work needs a licensed gas fitter.
7. Roof leaks, missing tiles or damage after a storm
Do not climb onto the roof. Falls from roofs cause serious injuries every year. Place a bucket, move belongings away, and call a professional for a safe inspection and repair.
8. Mould, damp patches or a musty smell
Mould is a sign of a moisture source you cannot see. Wiping it away without finding the cause means it returns. A large area, or anyone in the home with breathing problems, is a reason to call a professional promptly.
9. The same problem keeps coming back
A repair you have done twice that keeps failing means the real fault is elsewhere. Another attempt costs time and may hide a bigger issue. A professional can diagnose the root cause.
10. The job needs special tools, access or permits
If a task needs a ladder you are not comfortable on, power tools you have not used, a permit, or you are unsure what is behind the wall, that uncertainty is your answer. Call a pro. Doubt is a good reason to stop.
Quick guide: low-risk tasks vs. call a pro
Simple, low-risk jobs can be yours. Anything involving electricity, gas, water supply lines, heights or structure goes to a professional.
